Water Safety Courses for Ecologists: Choosing the Right Training Programme
Over the last decade, we have developed a particular specialism in delivering water safety training for ecologists and environmental professionals working in and around rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal environments.
Recent clients include:
- SEPA
- Caledonian Conservation
- Environmental Resources Management (ERM)
- Natural England
- The Atlantic Salmon Trust
- Marine Scotland
- Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCA)
- Eden Rivers Trust
- Buglife
- Freshwater Biological Association
- South Cumbria Rivers Trust
- West Cumbria Rivers Trust
Through our work with these organisations, we have gained extensive experience in understanding the hazards faced by ecologists and environmental practitioners. From routine river surveys to electrofishing operations, we help organisations develop safe systems of work for employees and contractors operating in remote and water-based environments.
Which Water Safety Course Is Right for Your Organisation?
One of the most common questions we receive is which water safety course is most appropriate for ecology and environmental work.
Historically, many organisations selected the DEFRA flood rescue training route because these programmes were among the first available and were often specified within tender documentation.
Today, tender requirements have generally become less prescriptive, instead requiring organisations to demonstrate that personnel have received appropriate and relevant water safety training. This gives employers greater flexibility when selecting the most suitable programme for their operational needs.
We deliver both DEFRA-aligned training and Rescue 3 industry water safety programmes. While course costs, durations and delivery locations are broadly similar, the content and intended audience differ significantly.
DEFRA Flood Rescue Training
DEFRA programmes were originally designed for emergency service personnel and responders who may encounter flood incidents as part of their duties. As such, they include important topics such as search operations, rescue considerations and incident command.
While these subjects are highly relevant to emergency responders, they do not always provide the level of detail required by ecologists and environmental professionals, particularly around risk assessment, safe systems of work and lifejacket competency.
Rescue 3 Industry Water Safety Training
For most ecology and environmental organisations, we recommend the Rescue 3 Industry Training Programmes for Working In or Near Water.
These programmes have been developed specifically for people whose work regularly takes them into proximity with water hazards and focus on practical risk management and personal safety.
Our Most Popular Water Safety Courses
Water Safety and Awareness
The Water Safety and Awareness course is a half-day classroom-based programme covering the fundamental principles of working safely around water.
Topics include:
- Water hazard identification
- Dynamic risk assessment
- Environmental considerations
- Emergency planning
- Developing safe systems of work
This course is ideal for managers, supervisors and staff responsible for planning or overseeing work near water. It can accommodate up to 12 delegates, making it a highly cost-effective training option. We typically deliver this course at client premises throughout the UK.
Lifejacket Competent User
The Lifejacket Competent User course builds upon the Water Safety and Awareness programme by providing practical, hands-on training in lifejacket use and maintenance.
The course covers:
- Different types of lifejackets and buoyancy aids
- Inspection and pre-use checks
- Servicing requirements
- Correct fitting and adjustment
- In-water experience while wearing a lifejacket
This programme takes approximately six hours and requires access to both a classroom and clean water. We can deliver this training at suitable venues across the UK.
Safe Working Near Water
The Safe Working Near Water course is a one-day programme designed for personnel who work adjacent to water but do not routinely enter it.
Typical delegates include:
- Ecologists conducting surveys
- Environmental consultants
- Water quality sampling teams
- River monitoring personnel
The course includes practical in-water elements, where delegates must demonstrate:
- Self-rescue techniques while wearing a lifejacket
- Reach rescues
- Throwline rescues
- Emergency response procedures
For many organisations, it is more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable for us to deliver this course at the client's location. We also run a number of open courses throughout the year.
Safe Working in Water
The Rescue 3 Safe Working in Water course is a two-day practical programme designed for personnel who enter water as part of their work activities.
This course is particularly relevant for those undertaking:
- Electrofishing
- Kick sampling
- Fish counter installation and maintenance
- Net deployment and recovery
- River habitat surveys
The programme requires access to suitable moving water and is delivered at locations across the UK, including:
- Lee Valley (North London)
- River Dart (Devon)
- Northampton
- Llangollen
- Preston
- Lancaster
- Carlisle
- Glasgow
- Grandtully (Perthshire)
Delegates develop the practical skills and confidence required to work safely in flowing water environments while understanding the limitations of personal protective equipment and rescue techniques.
