Water Safety for Film, TV & Media
Our team have years of experience of working with film crew in the UK and remote locations. We understand the pressures of filming on location and work around you to enable you can capture world-class footage while remaining safe.
Film & TV Water Safety Specialists
Water presents one of the most dynamic and unpredictable environments in film and television production. Whether you're filming a feature film on a remote coastline, capturing fast-moving action on whitewater, producing a documentary in the fjords of Greenland, or shooting commercial content on a tranquil lake, effective planning and experienced water safety professionals are essential to protect cast, crew and production schedules.
At Water Rescue, we provide professional water safety services for film, television, commercial, documentary and media productions throughout the UK and internationally. Our team works alongside producers, production managers, assistant directors, location managers, stunt coordinators and health & safety teams to deliver practical, proportionate and production-friendly water safety solutions.
With backgrounds in specialist rescue, emergency medicine, swiftwater rescue, mountain rescue and expedition leadership, we understand the unique pressures of film production. We know that locations change, weather evolves, schedules tighten and creative requirements shift. Our role is to help productions work safely without compromising efficiency or creativity.
Professional Water Safety for Film, Television & Media Productions
Every production presents different challenges. A presenter standing knee-deep in a river requires a different approach to a high-speed action sequence involving boats, while a wildlife documentary filmed from the shoreline has very different risks from a commercial filmed from floating pontoons.
We provide scalable water safety support for productions of all sizes, from single-camera documentary crews through to large multi-unit feature film productions.

Supporting Productions from Pre-Production to Wrap
Successful water safety begins long before cameras roll.
We work with production teams during pre-production to identify hazards, assess filming locations and develop practical safety plans that integrate seamlessly with your production schedule.
Our support can include:
-
Technical Location Recces
Our experienced team attends location recces to assess rivers, lakes, coastlines, reservoirs, estuaries, harbours and remote environments, identifying hazards such as water depth, flow rates, tides, submerged obstacles, unstable banks, access routes and emergency evacuation options.
-
Production Risk Assessments
We develop detailed water safety risk assessments and method statements tailored to the specific production, ensuring hazards are identified and practical control measures are implemented.
-
On-set Water Safety
During filming, our water safety professionals work closely with the production team, adapting to changing conditions while maintaining a proactive approach to risk management.
Water Safety Services We Provide
-
Water Safety Supervisors
Our Water Safety Supervisors oversee all water-related activities throughout production, coordinating rescue resources, monitoring changing conditions and providing expert advice to production management.
-
Marine Coordination
Where filming involves boats, pontoons, floating platforms or vessels, we coordinate marine operations to ensure the safe movement of personnel, equipment and watercraft throughout the production.
-
Safety Boats
We provide appropriately equipped rescue boats suitable for rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and coastal environments. Our safety boats are crewed by experienced rescue professionals capable of immediate response should an incident occur.
-
Rescue Swimmers
For productions involving performers, presenters or crew working in or near water, our rescue swimmers provide close protection and rapid response capability.
-
Swiftwater Rescue
Fast-flowing rivers present unique hazards including strainers, hydraulics, foot entrapment and rapidly changing water levels.
Our technicians are leading experts in swiftwater rescue and can provide specialist safety cover for productions filming on moving water.
-
Medical Cover
Many productions benefit from integrated medical support.
Our HCPC-registered paramedics and pre-hospital care professionals can provide medical cover alongside water safety operations, reducing the need for multiple contractors.
-
Remote Location Safety
Remote filming often combines multiple environmental hazards, including water, weather, difficult access and extended evacuation times.
Our experience supporting expeditions and remote operations enables us to assist productions working in challenging environments across the UK and internationally.
Arctic & Greenland Expedition Safety
While many productions take place in accessible locations, others venture into some of the world's most remote and demanding environments. Filming in Greenland and the High Arctic requires a level of planning, self-sufficiency and operational expertise that goes far beyond conventional water safety...
Water Rescue has extensive experience supporting expeditions and operating in Greenland, working in environments shaped by glacier-fed rivers, iceberg-filled fjords, freezing waters, rapidly changing weather and limited rescue infrastructure. These conditions demand meticulous preparation, sound judgement and the ability to operate safely where emergency assistance may be hours - or even days - away...
Our expertise extends beyond water safety alone. We provide expedition planning, remote medical support, technical risk assessments, casualty evacuation planning, satellite communications advice and dynamic operational risk management for productions working in isolated locations...
Whether supporting a television documentary, wildlife production, adventure series, commercial expedition or scientific field project, our Arctic experience provides production teams with the confidence that they are working alongside professionals who understand the realities of filming in extreme environments. The knowledge and experience gained through repeated operations in Greenland directly benefit every project we undertake. From remote Scottish sea lochs and mountain rivers to exposed coastal locations across the UK and overseas, our Arctic experience has shaped our approach to planning, resilience, emergency preparedness, and safe decision-making in challenging environments...
If your production is heading to Greenland or another remote Arctic destination, our team can provide specialist advice during pre-production, technical location support, expedition planning, on-location water safety, medical cover, and emergency response capability, giving your crew the confidence to work safely in some of the world's most spectacular and challenging environments.

Why Water Safety Matters
Many incidents occur in relatively shallow water where hazards such as cold water shock, unstable riverbeds, hidden obstacles, strong currents, or rapidly changing weather can quickly create dangerous situations.
Professional water safety isn't simply about responding to emergencies - it's about preventing them.
Our team continually monitors environmental conditions, communicates with production personnel and adapts safety measures throughout filming to reduce risk while allowing production to continue efficiently.

Film, TV & Media FAQs
Do I need water safety if actors are only standing in shallow water?
Potentially. Hazards such as cold water shock, unstable riverbeds, hidden drops, submerged debris and strong currents can all exist in shallow water. We assess each location individually and recommend an appropriate level of safety cover.
Can you provide safety boats?
Yes. We can provide safety boats, rescue craft and experienced operators for inland waterways, reservoirs, rivers and coastal filming.
Can you support stunt sequences?
Yes. We can work alongside stunt coordinators and production safety teams to provide specialist water safety support during complex filming operations.
Do you travel throughout the UK?
Yes. We support productions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and can also deploy internationally where required.
Can you provide medical cover as well as water safety?
Yes. Our team includes HCPC-registered paramedics, allowing us to integrate medical
support into water safety operations where appropriate.
Can you support production filming in Greenland or the Arctic?
Yes. Water Rescue has extensive experience operating in Greenland and remote Arctic
environments. We can provide expedition planning, technical location support, water safety, remote medical cover and operational risk management for productions filming in some of the world's most challenging locations.
When should we involve a watersafety team?
Ideally during pre-production. Early involvement allows us to assist with location planning, risk assessments, logistics and emergency planning, helping reduce delays once filming begins.
