Every week we're delivering a Rescue 3 Safe Working In or Near Water programme for our clients in industry either for people working directly on the tools or in consultancy roles.
As we do this the list of accidents and near misses we hear about increases (we should really write a book!) some recent examples:
- fainting in the water on weir construction project
- knocked unconscious while wearing a manual lifejacket
- sucked into a sluice
- falling out of boats - (lots)
- trapped by rising water
- capsizing work boats
- digger driving off a dock
- bank collapse
- stuck in mud
- tidal cut off
On some courses the first 30-40 minutes is taken up discussing actual near misses/incidents our clients have had and this is often the reason they find themselves on one of our programmes.
Lifejacket failure is also a common issue. When we visited one of clients offices and they showed us their lifejackets we had to condemn one within seconds - it didn't have a gas bottle fitted.
2 clients thought they had automatic lifejackets only to find out on the programme they were manuals!
